Irish and Catholic Tradition
|
This website is still under construction. Please be patient!
These
pages are offered with the aim of providing a concise set of notes on certain
topics of importance, which could be neglected in the general rush and
clamour of life.
The topics are in the order of:
• the physical framework of our civilisation
(History and current topics),
• the spiritual framework (Religious issues),
and
• the cultural framework (Irish culture).
• the physical framework:
Annals
of the Centuries
We need a framework on which to hang any new facts of history that we learn.
Suppose you know that so-and-so lived in the Fourteenth Century. Fine. Wouldn't you
like to be able to say immediately: "Ah yes, that was the century of the
Black Death and of the Rival Popes in Avignon and Rome....." these pages therefore present , from the 5th Century
BC to the present time, a digestible set of notes: one "box" on each century
plus concise notes on the main events. I recommend them to be memorised. do not underestimate the ability of the normal human mind to memorise! We tend to neglct this ability! I particularly recommend these pages for school children, homeschooled or in mainstream education.
Also, we include notes on the most ancient legends from as far back as we have them,
up to the 5th Century, when written records became widespread.

There is more to it than meets the eye.
The tradition has been developing according to its own "dúchas"
- inner integrity - for more than 2500 years. It is different.
And beguiling.

Praise of the Irish Language
Gaelic, the language of Ireland, has been developing
according to its own "dúchas" - inner integrity - for more than
2500 years. It is different. And beguiling. Literary
Irish, long neglected for various unedifying reasons, truly ranks with
Ancient Greek and Latin among the great Classical languages of the world. |
